Bela Lugosi in one of his features If the 1940s were bad for him, the 1950s were even worse.  Now there was no place for him in the cinema, and he survived by giving disastrous and humiliating live performances for a young audience who did not recognize him.  At the lowest ebb of his decline he crossed paths with an enthusiastic but crazy fringe director, Edward D.Wood Jr.  Wood was a fanatic of the cinema and dragged the aging addicted Bela Lugosi into his Z grade world giving him roles in a series of dreadful undiscerning films that led to Wood being called "the world's worst director".  However, the strange symbiosis between the two led to one of the best films of the nineties, Ed Wood, directed by an inspired Tim Burton, with Johnny Depp in the title role, and Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi - a role for which Landau won an Oscar as best supporting actor.  The Ed Wood films, Glenn or Glenda, Bride of the Monster and Plan 9 from Outer Space were cinematic testaments of Bela Lugosi, despite his having died several years before the last of these films was finished.

Ed Wood took advantage of fragments of footage featuring Bela Lugosi for these and other films in such a way that pieces of footage were incorporated into the films almost without alteration.  For the remaining scenes in which the presence of  the Hungarian actor, now deceased for three years, was required, Ed Wood contracted his girl friend"s chiropractor, whose face was covered by a cape to ingeniously prevent the audience noticing the changeover.

Bela Lugosi would die in 1956 at the age of 73, forgotten, and far from the glory that he had enjoyed for a few short years during his life.  Nevertheless, without renouncing this ephemeral splendour, and recalling the immortal prince he once was, Bela Lugosi had his wish fulfilled and was viewed and buried arrayed as Count Dracula.
