Bad Religion A Question of Being.
In spite of the popularity of the Emo look, there is little knowledge of its origins and connotations.

Equally with many other fashion concepts that have emerged throughout history, the Emo way of dressing shows a consistent relationship between music and alternative clothing design, although the Emo style does not create such a restricted urban tribe concept as occurs with other styles (Punk, Hip-hop, Mod, Rocker).

Emo fashion spreads its roots in Post-punk, Hardcore, Emocore and the Indie Rock phenomenon, music genres linked for the most part to the 1980s and reaching their peak of popularity in the 1990s.

The movement broke out in the 1980s, coinciding with the popularity of hardcore punk music among young Americans with the bands, Bad Religion, Hüsker Du and Minor Threat as a reference; aesthetic and thematic musical models were established which were very different to those of British Punk.  It was, to be precise, Minor Threat who became the precursors of the style after their evolution towards hardcore Emo style when they renamed themselves Fugazi.

In the 1990s the style definitively found recognition and has abounded to the present day.  From that decade and aided by the popularity of a new generation of rock bands, such as Sunny Day Real State, Rites of Spring, Dag Nasty and Weezer, that have embraced and given impetus to Emocore, the movement has continued to consolidate itself among the young throughout the world.  As well, the coming onto the scene of Grunge in the 1990s, with a conceptual position similar to Emo, has contributed to the Emo look and fashion being extended more rapidly.

Therefore we can also speak of Emo fashion as part of current Indie fashion taking in Punk, Grunge and independent alternative Pop and Rock, and that also extends its sphere of influence and referents to include any independent and alternative non-mainstream artistic and emotional form of expression (the cinema, literature, comics skateboarding, graffiti).
